GearHooks® are the perfect bike wall mount for garage bike storage, if you've got lots of bikes, or just a single bike wall mount for a flat, apartment or even the office.
You don’t even have to lift heavy bikes like mountain bikes or electric bikes. GearHooks® will hold any bike upright with its back wheel still on the ground. Just pull on the back wheel, take a few steps backwards so the bike rises onto its back wheel and then roll the bike forwards and hook the front wheel without lifting.
If you want to keep the floor clear you can mount the bike wall mount or bike wall rack high on the wall (as long as the wall and fixing are solid and you can lift the bike). Each GearHook® will hold up to 25kilos.
Our bike wall mounts will accept any bike type (road bike, mountain bike, downhill bike, ebike etc., any size bike (from childs to XL), any wheel size (26", 650b, 29", 700c) and all standard tyre sizes (up to 3").
GearHooks® are quick and easy to fit, using a single 8mm diameter hole for a single wall bike mount and just 3 holes for a bike wall rack, that will hold up to 5 bikes. No need to line up 3 or 4 tiny holes for each bike (that’s 20 holes for normal bike hooks!!).
There's even space in between your bikes for extra GearHooks® to store helmets, backpacks, shoes, track pumps, work stands, tools, spare parts and more.

What Are The Benefits Of A Bike Wall Mount or Hook?
Wall-mounted bike racks are an affordable and easy to install storage solution that not only saves space, but also makes your house look neater. A rack style wall mount can hang bikes vertically or horizontally depending on your preference.
A big pile of bikes in your garage is a recipe for disaster. They will always be in the way, will get scratched and damaged and the one on top will never be the one you want.
Bike wall mounts are a convenient cycle storage solution to keeping your bicycles neatly stored in the garage. By putting up some racks, you can save space, get to each one quickly and easily and they look neater too! Mounting your bike on the wall also means you free up floor space for larger things like lawn mowers and even cars!
A single bike wall mount is the simplest solution and simple allows you to hang one bike by the front wheel. A wall mounted bike rack allows you to store 3, 4, 5 bikes or more in a row. You can add or move hooks on the rack until all the bikes hang how you want to make them easy to put away and quick to get down.

How to Store Bicycles at Home: Space-Efficient Storage in Garages, Sheds and Indoors
Storing bicycles at home effectively usually involves using vertical space rather than leaving bikes standing on the floor. Many households keep bikes in garages, sheds or inside the house, where storage systems such as wall-mounted racks, hooks, or ceiling mounts help keep bikes organised and accessible. Wall storage is often considered the most space-efficient approach because it lifts bikes off the ground, reduces clutter and allows several bicycles to be stored along a single wall. Vertical racks typically maximise storage capacity, while horizontal mounts can make bikes easier to lift and access. Choosing the right method depends on available space, the number of bikes, and how frequently they are used.
Key Points About Storing Bikes at Home
- Wall-mounted storage keeps bikes off the floor and frees up space
- Vertical racks are usually the most space-efficient solution
- Horizontal racks can make bikes easier to lift and access
- Ceiling storage uses unused overhead space in garages
- Floor stands are simple but require more room
- Staggering bikes vertically can allow more bikes on one wall
- Indoor storage protects bikes from weather and theft
- Secure sheds with anchors can be effective for outdoor storage
1. What type of bike rack is best for a garage wall?
The most suitable bike rack for a garage wall depends on available space and how frequently the bikes are used. Vertical wall racks are often recommended when space is limited because they store bicycles upright and minimise the floor area required. This allows several bikes to be stored along a single wall without interfering with vehicles or work areas.
Horizontal wall racks support the bike by the frame and hold it parallel to the wall. These racks usually require more wall width but make it easier to lift the bike into position, which can be useful for heavier bikes.
When selecting a wall rack, it is important to check weight capacity, mounting requirements, and compatibility with different bike frame types. Installing the rack securely into wall studs or masonry ensures safe long-term use.
2. Should I buy a vertical bike rack or a horizontal wall mount?
Choosing between vertical and horizontal storage depends primarily on space constraints and ease of access. Vertical bike racks hold the bicycle upright by one wheel, allowing bikes to be stored closely together along a wall. This makes them particularly effective in narrow garages, sheds, or utility spaces.
Horizontal racks hold the bike parallel to the wall by supporting the frame. This configuration typically requires more wall space but makes it easier to lift the bike onto the rack and remove it quickly.
For households storing multiple bikes in a limited area, vertical racks usually provide the highest storage density. Horizontal mounts may be more suitable where appearance or ease of use is the main priority.
3. What features should I look for when buying a bike wall mount?
When choosing a wall mount for bicycle storage, several features are worth considering. First, the mount should have a sufficient weight rating to support the type of bike being stored, particularly for heavier electric or mountain bikes. Some hooks and racks enable the bike to be mounted vertically while the rear wheel stays on the floor. This allows the bike to be mounted without lifting it.
The mounting method is also important. A reliable rack should be designed to attach securely to wall studs, concrete, or other structural surfaces. Padding or rubberised contact points can help protect the bike’s frame or wheels from scratches.
Some racks include adjustable arms or folding mechanisms that allow the rack to be folded away when not in use. This can be useful in garages or rooms where space needs to remain flexible.
4. Are bike storage systems that hold multiple bikes worth buying?
Multi-bike storage systems can be a practical investment for households with several bicycles. Instead of installing separate hooks or racks for each bike, a dedicated system allows bikes to be organised neatly along a wall or within a single structure. You will drill fewer holes with a wall mounted bike rack compared to the same number of separate hooks.
These systems often use vertical hanging mechanisms or staggered horizontal mounts to maximise storage capacity. By using vertical space efficiently, they reduce clutter and keep bikes separated, preventing them from knocking into each other.
For families or shared households, a multi-bike rack can make garages or sheds significantly easier to organise while maintaining quick access to each bicycle.
5. Is a freestanding bike rack better than a wall-mounted rack?
Freestanding bike racks can be useful in situations where drilling into walls is not possible, such as rented homes or temporary storage areas. They typically allow bikes to stand upright on the floor with minimal installation.
However, freestanding racks occupy more floor space and may limit how many bikes can be stored in a given area. They may also only be suited to particular width tyres (road bike tyres are narrower that MTB tyres). Wall-mounted racks generally provide better space efficiency because they move bikes off the ground and use vertical wall space instead.
For homeowners looking to maximise storage capacity in a garage or shed, wall-mounted systems are usually the more practical option.
6. What type of bike rack works best in a small apartment?
In small apartments, the most effective bike storage options are usually compact wall mounts or vertical racks. These solutions allow bikes to be stored against a wall rather than occupying floor space in living areas.
Vertical racks are particularly popular in apartments because they require minimal wall width and can often fit behind doors or in narrow hallways. Some indoor racks are also designed to look visually appealing so that bikes can be displayed as part of the room.
When installing a rack indoors, it can be helpful to choose one that includes a wall protector or tyre guard to prevent marks on walls.
7. Are ceiling bike racks worth buying for home storage?
Ceiling bike racks can be a useful option when wall space is limited but ceiling height is available. These systems suspend bicycles overhead, typically using hooks or pulley mechanisms attached to ceiling joists. They are not suitable for heavy bikes like ebikes.
By storing lighter bikes above head height, ceiling racks free up floor and wall space for other uses. This makes them particularly useful in garages where bikes can be stored above parked cars.
However, ceiling systems may require more effort to load and unload bikes. They are often best suited for long-term storage or for bikes that are not used daily.
8. How do I choose the right bike rack for multiple bikes?
Selecting a rack for multiple bikes involves evaluating space, accessibility, and the number of bikes that need to be stored. Vertical wall racks are often the most efficient for storing several bikes because they allow bikes to be placed close together along a wall.
Another option is a modular wall system that can expand as additional bikes are added. This allows the storage layout to grow over time without replacing the entire rack.
For families or shared homes, choosing a system that allows each bike to be easily accessed without moving others can improve convenience.
9. Are bike hooks a good alternative to full bike racks?
Bike hooks are one of the simplest and most affordable bicycle storage solutions. A heavy-duty hook mounted into a wall stud can support a bike by its wheel and keep it off the floor.
Hooks are particularly effective for vertical storage because they require minimal hardware and installation space. They can also be spaced along a wall to accommodate multiple bikes.
10. Do bike racks work for all types of bicycles?
Most bike storage racks are designed to accommodate a wide range of bicycle types, including road bikes, mountain bikes, and hybrid bikes. However, some racks may have limitations related to tyre width, frame shape, or weight capacity.
For example, electric bikes and downhill mountain bikes can be significantly heavier than standard bikes, which may require racks with higher load ratings or one that allows bikes to be hung without lifting.
Before purchasing a rack, it is advisable to check the manufacturer’s specifications and ensure that the rack supports the bike’s weight and tyre size.
11. How much weight can a typical bike wall mount hold?
Many wall-mounted bike racks are designed to support between 20 and 30 kilograms, which is sufficient for most standard bicycles. Some heavy-duty racks can support higher weights for electric bikes or cargo bikes. Ones that allow the bike to be wheeled up, so the rear wheel remains on the floor, will take any weight of bike.
The actual load capacity depends on both the rack design and how it is installed. Even a strong rack must be attached securely to wall studs or structural surfaces to support the bike safely.
Following installation instructions and using appropriate anchors or screws helps ensure the rack performs as intended.
12. Are folding bike racks worth considering?
Folding bike racks can be useful in spaces where flexibility is important. These racks include arms or supports that fold flat against the wall when the bike is not in use.
This design allows homeowners to maintain clear walkways and maximise space when bikes are not stored. Folding racks are particularly helpful in garages or utility rooms where the wall space may need to serve multiple purposes.
While they may cost slightly more than basic hooks or fixed racks, folding racks can offer a practical balance between convenience and space efficiency.
13. Is it worth buying a dedicated bike storage system for a shed?
Installing a dedicated bike storage system in a shed can improve both organisation and security. Wall racks or hooks prevent bikes from leaning against each other, reducing scratches and making the shed easier to navigate.
Organised storage also creates more usable space for tools, gardening equipment, and other items typically stored in sheds.
When combined with a secure lock or anchor point, a structured storage system can also help protect bikes from theft.
14. How many bikes can typically fit on a wall rack?
The number of bikes that can be stored on a wall rack depends on the rack design and available wall space. Vertical storage systems usually allow bikes to be placed closer together than horizontal racks because they require less wall width. A rack with a 1 metre long rail will take up to 5 road bikes with some hanging toe to tail. The same rack will hold 3 mountain bikes comfortably.
In many garages, a single wall can hold several bikes when vertical racks or hooks are used. Staggering the height of each bike can also allow handlebars to overlap slightly without interference.
Planning spacing carefully helps maximise storage capacity while maintaining easy access.
15. Why do many people buy wall-mounted bike racks instead of floor stands?
Wall-mounted racks are often preferred because they make more efficient use of space. By lifting bicycles off the ground, they free up floor area for vehicles, storage shelves, or walking space.
Wall racks also help keep bikes organised and reduce the risk of bikes falling over or becoming tangled with other equipment. This can make garages and sheds safer and easier to use.
For households with limited space or multiple bikes, wall-mounted storage provides a practical solution that balances accessibility with efficient use of space.
